Twitter kills 143,000 apps – Why?

  1. Invasion of User Privacy
  2. Spam and malicious automation: This implies use of fake multiple accounts and Twitter developer platform to post or disseminate spam.
  3. Manipulating conversations.

Steps taken by Twitter to overcome the challenges

Twitter has so far obliterated 143000 apps (Twitter kills 143,000 apps) that violated company’s policies and is now working to limit the access of these apps to twitter’s platform. This is done in order to improve the visibility and control on how developers use Twitter’s platform and public data and how people are using their services.
  • A new way to Register to Twitter’s API:
A New Developer Account Application process has been introduced to:
  1. Review the use cases
  2. Check for Policy compliance
This means:
    1. New Registers: From now on developers who seek access to twitter’s premium API should apply for a developer account using developer.twitter.com- a new developer portal. This will enable your application to be processed to check if it complies with the new protocol. Once approved you could create new apps and manage the existing ones on developer.twitter.com.
      1. Existing Registers: Existing developers who already have access to twitter’s API are required to complete developer account application in order to maintain their apps on apps.twitter.com. The policy has not been implemented yet. Twitter promises to provide 90 days notice to developers before enforcing this requirement.
Twitter however is planning to remove apps.twitter.com portal. If this happens twitter will ensure that the developers are able to manage their apps on the new portal developer.twitter.com, even before starting the application process.Twitter kills 143,000 apps
